1 Raman Scattering Theory David W. Hahn Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering University of Florida ([email protected]) Introduction The scattering of light may be thought of as the redirection of light that takes place when an electromagnetic (EM) wave (i.e. an incident light ray) encounters an obstacle or nonhomogeneity, in our case the scattering material (solid, liquid or gas). As the EM wave interacts with the matter, the electron orbits within the constituent molecules are perturbed periodically with the same frequency (νo) as the electric field of the incident wave. The oscillation or perturbation of the electron cloud results in a periodic separation of charge within the molecules, which is called an induced dipole moment. The oscillating induced dipole moment is manifest as a source of EM radiation, thereby resulting in scattered light. The majority of light scattered is emitted at the identical frequency (νo) of the incident light, a process referred to as elastic scattering. However, as explained below, additional light is scattered at different frequencies, a process referred to as inelastic scattering. Raman scattering is one such example of inelastic scattering. In summary, the above comments describe the process of light scattering as a complex interaction between the incident EM wave and the material’s molecular/atomic structure.

Spectroscopy, Structural, and Optical Investigations of NiFe2O4 Ferrite

Ni ferrite crystalline material is synthesized using a sol-gel method at two different temperatures. The vibrational and stretching modes, crystalline phase, size distribution and morphology of the products are investigated via Raman back-scattering and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, XRD and FESEM, respectively. Vibrational modes of spinel ferrite are observed at Raman and FTIR...

Investigation of Scalar Modulation Instability in the Presence of Raman Scattering in Photonic Crystal Fibers

In this paper, by including Raman scattering in the coupled-mode equations, the scalar modulation instability in photonic crystal fibers is investigated. The evolution of the pump, Stokes and anti-Stokes waves along the fiber as well as the conversion efficiency for two cases, with and without Raman effect, are studied. The effect of anti-Stokes seed and the pump depletion on the evolution of S...

Resonance Raman scattering of light from a diatomic molecule

Resonance Raman scattering of light from a diatomic molecule" (1976). Resonance Raman scattering from a homonuclear diatomic molecule is considered in detail. For convenience, the scattering may be classified into three excitation frequency regions-off-resonance Raman scattering for inciderit energies well away from resonance with any allowed transitions, discrete resonance Raman scattering for...

On the chemical bonding effects in the Raman response: Benzenethiol adsorbed on silver clusterswz

We study the effects of chemical bonding on Raman scattering from benzenethiol chemisorbed on silver clusters using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). Raman scattering cross sections are computed using a formalism that employs analytical derivatives of frequency-dependent electronic polarizabilities, which treats both off-resonant and resonant enhancement within the same scheme. ...

Resonant Enhancement of Electronic Raman Scattering

We present an exact solution for electronic Raman scattering in a single-band, strongly correlated material, including nonresonant, resonant and mixed contributions. Results are derived for the spinless Falicov-Kimball model, employing dynamical mean field theory; this system can be tuned through a Mott metal-insulator transition.
